VI.SA. DANCE PROJECT

WHO WE ARE:

VI.SA. Dance Project is a collective co-founded by Virginia Poli and Sara Maurizi, both Italian contemporary dance artists based in London.
The project was born during the Covid-19 pandemic, as Brexit was being finalized, as a way to express and reconnect to our European identity and artistic practice.
Our vision is to create works that address the concept of cultural identity, diversity, stereotypes and integration.

In a time where the world is divisive, we feel dance is the way to celebrate and connect through our individuality.

WHAT WE DO:

The collective develops choreographic and performance work that addresses political and psychological themes. Using the body as the main tool of enquiry, and physical representation as its narrative, we explore movement through improvisation and physical theatre practices.

OUR WORK:

Our first work, the duet ®esistentia, explores the concept of resistance through the body and takes inspiration from the Italian Resistance against Fascism as a paradigm of what it means to resist and exist as female artists in the post Brexit scenario.

The work has been produced between Italy and London thanks to the support of Trinity Laban, London Performance Studios, Centre 151, Home Centro Coreografico - Dance Gallery and MOVIN’UP AREA SPETTACOLO – PERFORMING ARTS XXII edizione 2020/2021. Promoted by MIC Ministry of Cultural - General Directorate for Performing Arts and GAI Association for the Circuit of the Young Italian Artists together with TPP Puglia Public Theater - Apulia Region and GA/ER Association Young Italian Artists of Emilia-Romagna.

The work premiered in July 2022 at UMBRIA DANZA FESTIVAL (IT).

In 2022, the collective was awarded with the DYCP grant from Art Council England and developed its artistic and teaching practice.

TEACHING & COMMUNITY:

As VI.SA. Dance project, we are experienced in teaching in inclusive settings to community groups as well as leading professional class to dancers. We have held our classes and community workshops at TripSpace, The Lodge, Centre 151, Mycenae House, Dance Gallery (IT).
As we believe dance and creativity belong to all, our aim is to transmit tools that can open up different physicalities and creative minds in order to dive into the language of the body.
This is why we have been developing our teaching practice.

Our goal is to grow into a network of multidisciplinary artists from diverse backgrounds that challenges the limiting narratives of European identity.
We hope to see our work impacting the dialogue amongst artists and audiences around the topics of identity, immigration and integration.
